My wife and I share most of the housework fairly equally. There are only a few jobs that only one of us does, and the rest are thought of as   21  duty. This situation  22   naturally rather than being the result of some    23   design. It is the result of our both having careers and  24   to the income of the household. If    25    of us, for some reason, stopped working outside the home, the    26    of responsibility would certainly change.

Since I began doing housework on an equal    27    what has    28    me is how easy it is. I do not mean that all the housework itself is easy; I mean that to take over tasks    29    regarded as “women’s work” was not as difficult a personal experience as I had expected. I thought, then ,that I would not only    30    curious attention from other people, but that I would have difficulty personally adjusting to    31    housework in a home in which my father never did any, and where I had never been obliged to do any either.

I was quite surprised, then, when not only   32   I not receive so much as a     33   eyebrow when wheeling a baby carriage down the middle of my street, but I found myself enjoying these new tasks very much.    34    that I enjoy every aspect of child care, cooking, and cleaning. A few things about child care are    35    .But the whole experience made me curious about the experience of other men who had taken over housework as I had done . I wondered how they felt about it, whether they found it as much of an adventure as I did, if they learned about themselves as much as I had.

Read the two passages and answer the questions. (15 points)

Passage 1

Chinese basketball players have never been so close to the NBA before, but questions remain about how they will adjust to life in the NBA if they go. Wang Zhizhi, the 2.16-metre center for the Bayi Rockets who was chosen by the Dallas Mavericks two years ago, has finally received permission from authorities to travel to Dallas to play for the rest of the NBA season after he finishes playing in the Chinese Basketball Associations finals on March 25th. If he has no problems with his visa, Wang will be the NBA’s first Asian player. Wang was chosen by the Mavericks in the second round of the 1999 draft, but the Rockets, an army-run club, refused to let him go. After negotiations between the Rockets and NBA representatives, the decision was made to allow Wang the chance to try his hand at American basketball, but only for a short period of time. He has to be back to play in the Ninth National Games in November in Guangzhou. Another center who has attracted attention from the NBA is Yao Ming, the 2.25-meter star who has led the Shanghai Sharks into the final fight with the Rockets this year. The 20-year-old’s NBA dreams might be harder to realize. Yao is the center of the Sharks and the club’s manager Bei Genyuan has said that he would allow Yao to go only at a proper time, for a proper team and under proper conditions. Yao hasn’t been chosen yet and it is unlikely that he will be any time soon. People in the Shark’s front office earlier told members of the press that “it is not proper for Yao to attend the draft this year” because he has to represent Shanghai in the Ninth National Games. Even if Wang and Yao make it to the promised land of basketball at last, analysts on both sides of the Pacific have said the NBA road will be a long one for both of them. Besides needing to work on their upper body strength, Wang and Yao will also have to adapt to the speed, techniques and above all, culture of the NBA.

(2)

Passage 2

Scattered through the seas of the world are billions of tons of small plants and animals called plankton (浮游生物). Most of these plants and animals are too small for the human eye to see. They drift about lazily with the currents, providing a basic food for many larger animals.

Plankton has been described as the equivalent (相等物) of the grasses that grow on the dry land continents, and the comparison is an appropriate one. In potential food value, however, plankton far outweighs that of the land grasses. One scientist has estimated that while grasses of the world produce about 49 billion tons of valuable carbohydrates (碳水化合物) each year, the sea’s plankton generates more than twice as much.

Despite its enormous food potential, little effort was made until recently to farm plankton as we farm grasses on land. Now, marine scientists have at last begun to study this possibility, especially as the sea’s resources loom even more important as a means of feeding an expanding world population.

No one yet has seriously suggested that “plankton-burgers” may soon become popular around the world. As a possible farmed supplementary food source, however, plankton is gaining considerable interest among marine scientists.

One type of plankton that seems to have great harvest possibilities is a tiny shrimp-like creature called krill (磷虾). Growing to two or three inches long, krill provide the major food for the giant blue whale, the largest animal ever to inhabit the Earth. Realizing that this whale may grow to 100 feet and weigh 150 tons at maturity, it is not surprising that each one devours more than one ton of krill daily.

Krill swim about just below the surface in huge schools sometimes miles wide, mainly in the cold Antarctic. Because of their pink color, they often appear as a solid reddish mass when viewed from a ship or from the air. Krill are very high in food value. A pound of these crustaceans contains about 460 calories—about the same as shrimp or lobster, to which they are related.

If the krill can feed such huge creatures as whales, many scientists reason, they must certainly be contenders as a new food source for humans.

B.It refers to grasses and the like that grow at the bottom of the ocean.

C.It refers to small plants and animals that provide a basic food for many larger animals.

D.It is scattered through the seas of the world.

(3)

According to the passage, plankton is considered to be more valuable than land grasses, because_____.

A.it is more tasty

B.it produces more carbohydrates

D.The quality of it is much more than the land grass

(4)

A.they are encouraged by the former efforts made about it

B.the sea resources appear more important as a means of feeding an expanding world population

C.plankton can be fertilizers to grasses
